Hey there, Mr. Grumpy Gills. When life gets you down, do you wanna know what you've gotta do? Just keep on swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? We swim, swim! ~Dory (Finding Nemo)

Catching Up

Yes, I am woefully behind in my updates. Here’s the past two weekends and last week:

Weekend before last, Phillip decided he wanted to go to a racing event in Indianapolis. It sounds like a long way, but we are only about an hour and a half from Indianapolis. So it was easily doable in an afternoon. Unfortunately, it was rather dreary outside. They kept having to stop the racing to dry off the track and wait for the sprinkles to subside. The wind and cloudiness made it seem colder than it should’ve been. We did walk around during the track-drying times and I got a picture of Archie pretending to drive a dragster.

I tried to get some pictures of cool starts during the races. Like when the cars pop a wheelie taking off. I didn’t get any good pictures. You pretty much have to get lucky on those. But there were a couple of neat starts that I hate I couldn’t capture.

On Sunday, Archie got it in his head that he would like to build a birdhouse. This idea must’ve come from no where, because usually he’ll get ideas based on what we’ve been reading or what movies he has been watching. We haven’t studied or read anything about birdhouses. So, off we went to Michaels to see about getting some supplies. We found some perfect wood pieces and even a miniature model to go by.

The boys cut their pieces into the correct sizes and got the pieces ready to paint. When we moved in this house, we inherited a whole closet chock full of various colours of paints. Some were never opened, some smelled quite foul they were so old. Anyhow, they picked out a few colours and we all had a lovely time painting our pieces. Here are Phillip and Archie working on their parts:

We left the birdhouse alone for a few days to dry. During this past weekend, Phillip and Archie got some rope and eyelets so they could hang it from a tree. Here is the finished birdhouse:

They hung it in the purple tree out back. Well, it looks brown now, but later in the summer it turns a deep purple colour that is quite pretty and unusual to see on a tree!

Last week was a fabulous week as far as the weather goes. The temperature was cool at night and a comfortable 75 during the day. Here is a picture of a yellow tulip from my garden.

It’s been great to sit outside in the evenings and watch the people walking their dogs and kids playing. Last week, we had one other minor incident with a different bully, who had threatened to take Archie’s bike. Fortunately, Phillip was outside and heard the whole thing. He confronted the kid and I haven’t seen that one back since. The other one that I confronted walked by while we were outside. I pointed him out to Phillip. The kid saw me singling him out and I haven’t seen him around since either. Perhaps the punks got the memo not to mess with the little kids outside the brown brick house. I suspect other people in the neighbourhood were having trouble with this group of punks because I have begun seeing a police car cruise by around 5:30 or so for a few days in a row. I don’t know what fascination the area hoodlum has with Archie’s bike. It’s way too small for THEM to ride, and it’s not like it’s a specialty bike or anything. I think we got it from Toys R Us or somewhere, and it’s pretty ordinary. Northerners are so weird.

On Thursday of last week, Archie had the second zoo class in the spring series. The featured animal was lizards. The teacher was a younger guy, probably someone doing college work, who was just great with the kids! Archie really enjoyed the class. He found another boy to pal around with during the ‘zoo hike’ to the reptile exhibit. He really enjoyed playing “Predator/Prey” with the teacher on the hike, where the teacher (the predator) would walk up a few steps and turn quickly around. If he saw the kids (the prey) move, then they were the predator’s dinner. Archie got to pet a bearded lizard and a blue-tongued skink. Here he is reacting when the bearded lizard was taken out of his box:

During this past weekend, besides finishing and hanging the birdhouse, we went to a car show in Sharonville, which is another suburb of Cincinnati. It’s about a 20-minute drive from home. It was quite bigger than Phillip expected. They had most of downtown Sharonville blocked off and quite a few folks had brought their cars out. Here is a picture of the boys enjoying some ice cream from The Cone Zone. Incidentally, the hat Archie is wearing is a balloon hat. A Tornado, to be precise.

The highlight of the show for Archie was the Batmobile replica. He was so excited! He just had to take our picture in front of it:

You couldn’t get a clear shot of the car without other people wandering in the frame because people surrounded it all the time. It was really neat looking. There were even miscellaneous knobs and lights in there for the Batmobile’s “computer” from the TV series. It was very authentic looking—from the cool steering wheel to the jet engine thingy in the back. Archie spent the whole ride home talking about that Batmobile car. He thinks we really need a Batmobile. What boy wouldn’t need a real Batmobile???

Our clay fire pit had an unfortunate accident about a month or so ago. I had it standing against the porch railing so water wouldn’t accumulate in it, freeze, then break it. Well, we’ve had a couple of really strong windstorms, one of which blew it down and it broke. So I’ve been wanting to get a new fire pit. On Saturday I picked one out. Or actually, Archie picked one out. We went with a different style…a Chiminea style. Not made of clay or terra cotta. It’s iron, with a chimney, with screening all around. Archie and Phillip put it together immediately. While Phillip was working on Morgan’s car, Archie and I went out to grab fire pit supplies. You know…marshmallows, hotdogs and stuff. So we had a lovely Saturday evening sitting around the fire pit.

So that should catch us up to this week. Phillip’s in Paducah again and we’re trying to get back into a routine again.
