We wanted a trophy picture with Lawrence too!
Now for some Soapbox Derby pictures! This one had an "Alice in Wonderland" theme, complete with the crew of sweaty dudes dressed up as the characters. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of the way-sexy Alice. He was breathtaking! :-) You can see the Mad Hatter rolling down the road in the teacup. The teacup actually spun round and round all the way down!
Another offering was entitled "Crapple Jacks" or some such thing. Perhaps on a Richard Scary Book goes to the bathroom theme, since the person driving looked a bit like Lowly Worm (or Pedro, as my Mom likes to call him). The person was riding down on a toilet contained in a large apple. You can see the toilet paper flailing out behind the craft.
I really enjoyed the Koolaid Kraft the most. The skit at the beginning had the crew standing in front of a bunch of cardboard 'bricks' and complaining how hot it was and bemoaning the fact that there was nothing to drink. Then, as per the circa 1970's commercials go, you hear an "Oh, no??? OH YEAH!!!", as the Koolaid man used to say. And the Koolaid craft crashes through the wall and takes off down the hill. Very well done! But I'm a sucker for all things 70's and early 80's...brings back fond memories... :-)
However, the BEST part of the Koolaid Man's run was the unfortunate accident which took place right across where we were standing. Our first Soapbox Derby wreck!! Oh, NO, you say??? Well I say "OH, YEAH!!!!"
These guys didn't make it around Cut in the Hill...Cincy's version of Dead Man's Curve, combined with a steep hill. We were at the end of the track, so we didn't get to see this wreck.
This is a picture of a "Cincinnati Three-Way"...Not what you think, dirty birdies!!! For those not from around these here parts, a Three-Way is a yummy food item you get at Skyline Chili. "Cincinnati" style chili, on top of spaghetti noodles, all smothered with tons of shredded cheese. The crew of this vehicle dressed up as condiments. Mustard, Tabasco, etc.
These were just samplings of a few of the vehicles we saw. The Pac-man car was worth mentioning because the large pac-mouth opened and closed all the way down the hill. Archie liked the King Tut's Sarcophagus, complete with Mummy driver dusted in a generous helping of baby powder for affect. We didn't stay for the whole thing, as it was getting long and a bit warmish with my human oven, Lawrence, attached to me. Which leads me to a pet peeve...What in the heck were families doing there with all the doggone strollers???? The event was packed out, there was *maybe* a square foot of personal space per walking person...not enough for the huge strollers, complete with humongous diaper bags perhaps containing lunches, drinks, various non-necessary baby items, lap-top computers, large boulders, or whatever. I can't count how many strollers ran over my foot, and huge diaper bags slammed into me and Lawrence. Meanwhile, we are taking up our allotted one-square-foot of personal space. I'm so glad I'm not a stroller person! Having Lawrence's food permanently attached to my chest makes things very convenient! I hate crowds to begin with...but to navigate through the throng with a whole bunch of crap with me would be hell. I guess I'll get off my soapbox now. Get it?? Soapbox? Hee! Hee!
Here is a picture of me with the kids as we were leaving. Notice my lack of unnecessary crap. Ok...Enough...I'm really done now...
A fun day, to be sure! The Red Bull Soapbox derby is lots of fun, but just pack your patience with crowds and leave your strollers and baby stuff that won't fit on your chest at home. Ok...really...I'm done with that now! Let it go...let it go...
As previously promised, here is a short video of Archie doing a few his feather tricks. The hundred bucks I paid for him to take this class was SO worth it! He can't wait til Mondays now!
