Miss Lydia has been really excited about her birthday for a few days. I guess Lawrence must have spilled the beans that birthdays are good things, because she would break out into smiles and giggles when we mentioned her birthday! In fact, it was hard to decide who was more excited about the birthday--her or Lawrence! He talked non-stop the day or so before and on the Big Day as to what the procedure was. Turn out the lights, sing Happy Birthday To You, blow out candles, turn on lights, eat cake and open presents. The night before her birthday, when I put her to bed, she snuggled up close and nuzzled me with her nose and smiled when I whispered to her about her birthday the next day!
Friday morning, I made the cake, then frosted it. Archie and Lawrence wanted to decorate it while Baby was down for her nap. Lawrence went a little crazy with the sprinkles, so Archie had to re-write Lydia's name on the cake! Notice that the cake is pink. Pink is for Baby. So says Lawrence.
Lawrence was so excited about the cake that he didn't eat any pizza, and appears to be chewing on his plate in anticipation.
Baby is in a 'do it myself' phase currently, which is maddeningly frustrating. She has to do everything, everything for herself. Which would be fine if I had an infinite amount of time to get things done. But I don't. So here she is, eating her ice cream herself and she refused any help whatsoever. "No! Do it!" is the refrain I hear most often after I try to help her.
Finally, she allowed Phillip to help her with the ice cream. I guess it's all about who asks.
Years ago, my Mom made these two dolls for me. She says that the doll-making experience wasn't a great one for her, and after these dolls themselves were complete, she was quite sick of them. They never received clothing of any kind because after she got them made, she was done. Unfortunately, I wasn't much of a dolly-type of girl, so the dolls sat naked among my slew of stuffed animals for years. After Phillip and I got married, I considered passing them along to Morgan, but her maternal grandparent gave her lots of fancy dolls and I didn't want to compete with all that. I kept them stored because I thought perhaps someday I'd have a girl who would like them. So I found them in the attic, dusted them off, found some clothing from Lydia's drawer (Lydia and the dollies wear the same size, apparently) and wrapped them up for Lydia's birthday. They are as big as she is, so they are a bit difficult to play with right now, but I think she likes them. The one is pictured below. The other one has short curly brown hair.
Poor Lawrence was having a fit that he couldn't open Lydia's gifts. He helped her unwrap most of them, but there was more than one occasion where he was trying to sneakily open one he chose out of the pile while Lydia was busy opening another one!
My parents sent a few outfits up for Lydia as well. It was very amusing because she'd open a gift that was clothes and had to put them on that very minute. Phillip was kept very busy putting on clothes and taking them off when something new showed up!
I got lots of criticism from Mom when I was in Mobile and brought the same bathing suit that both the boys had worn when they were 18 months old. She's a baby...I didn't think it mattered! Apparently it mattered to Mom because she gave me lots of 'what for' for not having a girl swim suit for Lydia. With that experience in mind, I went out and bought her this one pictured below for her birthday. Funny thing was that Mom bought her a swim suit for her birthday as well. Lydia liked the swim suits. She has been prancing around in them since she got them!
More new clothes!
Being the family photographer and historian has it's drawbacks. I am rarely in any videos or photographs because I am usually the one who is shooting said video or photograph. I had to 'special request' that Phillip take a picture of me and Baby together on this her second birthday just before bedtime.
Here we are singing Happy Birthday. Sorry about the pitch blackness in the first part. But some in the family are not very flexible on procedure at all and must have all the lights out during the birthday song!
