I have been very lax with the updates…part of it was that I have been feeling large and uncreative. Another reason is that we have been super busy this summer and I have been unable to stay up late to work on the blog. I guess I’ll update according to the events going on this summer.
I'll begin with the Cincinnati Rollergirls.
I was actually able to talk Phillip into taking us to the Rollergirls back in June. If you haven’t experienced Rollergirls, this is a must-do activity!

Since it was our first experience with roller derby, I printed roller derby instructions and rules from the internet so we would have an idea of what was going on, because I’m such a nerd. We arrived early in order to get our bearings and good seats. We came in and the ladies were roller-skating in the lobby passing out the programs. Printing the rules of play turned out to be unnecessary, because when I opened the program, there was plenty of explanation printed right there! Also, there were photos of the roller derby ladies, who had cool pseudonyms such as June with a Cleaver, Rocky Balrolla, Skates with Fists and Sista Sacrelicious. Phillip’s favourite Jammer was Sadistic Sadie. They were pictured with various snarls, smirks, grimaces and various tough-girl looks on their faces. Even the referees had goofy pseudonyms like Hannibal Refter and Curtastrophe. And of course, the announcer was Collier Mama.
The Cincinnati Rollergirls use a flat track instead of the slanty one that you’ve probably seen on tv. As it turns out, it was very much like watching ice hockey…with all the skating around and knocking people down. It turns out knocking down a referee is a real crowd pleaser, but almost always lands one in the penalty box.
Phillip had a great time…like I said before…dollar beer, girls in fishnet stockings knocking each other down…how could he NOT have a good time??? He said he wished he had known about the Rollergirls when he was working in Cincinnati before we moved. He and his coworker would’ve really enjoyed themselves! I keep telling him that they did too much highbrow stuff while they were here. Eating in fancy restaurants, going to Reds games, hanging out at the high-end part of town…They needed me to find all the cool low-brow ‘regular folks’ kind of stuff to do.
Here’s a not-very-good picture of the roller derby happening.

The folks sitting on the floor behind the pink line opted for the best seats in the house—aptly named the Suicide Seats! You had to be over 18 to sit there and assume all risks and responsibility for inevitable injuries. There were a few ladies knocked in the suicide seating section. It was difficult to get a good picture of the pile-ups because those ladies got up so darned fast!
The Cincinnati Zoo had a representative there with some animals. Archie enjoyed checking them out. Here’s an owl on display:

All in all, a very fun evening for everyone! I highly recommend it for an evening out with or without the kids.
