So back to Mobile. Since Regular E had been feeling poorly with his kidney stone inheritance from the Champion side of the family, he kindly left his kayaks at my folks' house. I took advantage and planned a kayak with Andrew on Big Creek Lake. It was dang hot when we started out. This is the only photo of me out there. It's hard to take your own picture.
Here is Andrew taking a water break.
As it turns out, kayaking is not kind to your manicure. I had just gotten my nails done the previous day. I guess that's why I don't do much girly stuff like getting my nails done very often...I invariably ruin it the very next day doing my daily stuff. Oh well...if it wasn't the kayaking it would've been something else.
The pedicure, however, was just fine!
Andrew again. As you can see in the sky background, the sky began getting darker and darker. And there we were out in the water in the middle of nowhere. The plus side was that it was drastically cooler and I would venture to say almost pleasant out for Mobile, Alabama in the middle of summer! We were sweating it for a bit, worrying about getting stuck out there on the lake in an Alabama thunder and lightening storm! Fortunately we made it in before the deluge began.
Pretty much all of Big Creek Lake looks the same. Inky black water with little green points of land all over the place. I made Andrew kayak for miles and miles. I had always wanted to see the 'water' side of the dam at Tanner Williams Road and get a picture of the spillway from the water's perspective. But as it turns out, they had it blocked off with buoys and this was as close as I could get. You'd have to click the picture big to even see the bridge by the spillway. I thought of crossing the buoys, but the Coast Guard kept flying around that area while we were paddling around. I guess the government is reading my brainwaves after all! Perhaps I should've put on my aluminum foil helmet.
Andrew asked if my Dad could pick us up there at Tanner Williams Road, but I made him kayak all the way back to Howells Ferry Road. We were both very tired!
I was to call Dad when we were ready to go. The weird thing was that his cellular phone is iffy at best at his house, which is right next to Big Creek Lake. However, IN the lake, the cellular phone had beautiful reception!!! Bars galore!
It was a fun day! We did learn a few things...DON'T get a manicure the day before kayaking. The boat launch at Howell's Ferry is a lot further away from Tanner Williams Road than one would think. Especially on the way back. It's FIVE bucks, not three to use the launch at Howell's Ferry Road. And don't, DON'T short the boat launch guy two bucks when you put your money in the envelope and stick it in the bin, even if that's all you brought with you. He WILL follow you home!!!
