What in the world did I do all month??? There are absolutely zero May pictures from 2010! This is the most boring post in the history of my blog. Sorry! Looking back at the blog for that month, all I did was fail at attempting to play catch up. But I did document our first ever camping trip in our camper. But not one stinkin' picture for the whole month!! Bad family historian!!! Bad, bad, bad!!!

Cabin Fever
I can't express in words how difficult it is getting out with a baby and toddler in the winter time. Well, getting out anytime is quite a feat, but winter is especially difficult. Just getting the diaper bag loaded with emergency snacks and bottles of water, as well as an extra outfit in case of icky blow-outs. Then getting everyone's shoes, coats, hats, gloves and any other paraphernalia that has been deemed as necessary. Of course, as soon as everyone is either ready to step out of the house, or already in the car, a funky smell wafts about. Someone pooped and you have to undo everything, 'get the poop out' as Lawrence says, and re-do everything. So, as one can imagine, we spend more time at home rather than making the colossal effort to go out. It's just too hard!
Thankfully, we are smack in the city and are within walking distance of church activities, rec center activities, library and Walgreens. I can't tell you how many times I went to Walgreens to pick up some small item and just end up meandering around the store for 30 minutes or so.
So I guess you could say that I have a bit of cabin fever. I am sick of gray skies, sick of cold and sick of snow. I am SO ready for our trip to the Sunny South!
We got our membership cards for the Museum Centre in the mail a few days ago, so I decided that today would be the day...we would be taking a day trip out! Interestingly, we have never ventured into the Cincinnati History part. We have done the Natural History and Children's Museum many times (and still love them!) and have taken in a few special exhibits and Imax films, but not the Cincinnati History. I have been itching to see it, but I figured it wouldn't be fun for the kids and I didn't want to rush through it. So we tried it today.
It was fantastic! There was hardly anyone else there! No school buses, no crowds, all the exhibits to ourselves! Score!! My kind of day...I love homeschooling!!!!!
Lawrence loved, LOVED the Cincinnati in Motion part where there was a model of the city circa 1940 and there were trains and street cars running all through it. I dunno what it is about trains that toddlers find so fascinating, but he can't get enough trains. He kept pointing out the 'chicka choo choo trains' and would just stand and watch them go by. I liked the city replica and it was really cool to see how things have changed and how things have remained the same since 1940. Archie was very observant, picking out buildings he recognized. I was pretty impressed with what he knew!
There was an interesting section about Cincinnati during WWII. Archie seemed to like that best because there were soldiers' possessions on displays, guns, flags, and uniforms. He and I are similar...I like looking at personal stuff at museums. A hat that someone actually wore while doing something significant, or a real letter written by a solder to his mom, etc.
The section about the Native Americans' presence here, and the settling of Cincinnati was quite good too. Then Cincinnati becoming the 'Queen City' and it's role on the Ohio River. The guy from the dry goods store in the life-sized 'downtown back in the day' section was super nice and told us stories and let the kids play with toys from yester year. Ball and cup is not as fun as Nintendo. Just so you know.
After all that excitement, we ate our snacks, then went to the Children's Museum to let the kids run off the last smidge of energy before heading home. Lawrence really liked that too. Sliding, specifically. Lawrence really, really enjoyed himself! So much that he was getting ready for full melt-down mode when I mentioned going home. I had to appease him when we left by telling him we would come back again soon. Apparently there was a little misunderstanding about that.
After his nap, he woke up, immediately asked for his shoes, and was ready for 'more slide' and 'more chicka choo choo trains'. *Sigh.* I tried to explain that we weren't going back TODAY soon, but SOON soon.
Phillip came home sometime after that, and Lawrence, who was watching tv at the time, immediately gets off the couch, is babbling at Phillip about 'slide' and 'chicka choo-choo' and is asking for his socks-shoes, jacket and hat. I guess we'll be going to the Museum Centre again very soon! And why not??? It's too damn cold to do anything else!!!!! --the Alabama family can read that last statement in Julie's Ann's voice!
