Hey there, Mr. Grumpy Gills. When life gets you down, do you wanna know what you've gotta do? Just keep on swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? We swim, swim! ~Dory (Finding Nemo)

Happy Third "Dirthday" to Lawrence T. Torrence

We had a great day here at the Dutton house.  This morning, in honor of Lawrence's birthday, we decided to hit the Museum Centre.  The Cleopatra Exhibit has been beckoning for quite some time.  Every time I planned a trip there this summer, something would happen so that we couldn't go.  Today was our day!  Better yet, they were running a kids-get-in-free promotion.  Timing is everything when traveling with two little kids.  Although I left later than I had originally intended, things couldn't have gone better under the circumstances.

Archie is really excited about Greek mythology, thanks to the Rick Riordan series of books about Percy Jackson and the Olympians (which he has now has me reading as well!) .  He really got into the exhibit due to the parallels of the Egyptian gods with the Greek and Roman gods.  The exhibit was quite good and I wish I could have heard more of the audio part of the tour.  Even on their best behavior, little kids require a lot of attention around items they aren't supposed to touch!  However, Archie seemed to get a lot out of the exhibit, as he walked around with the the audio thingy glued to his ear and seemed to really enjoy himself and got excited about various things in it.

As a reward for the little kids doing as well as could be expected in the "Don't Touch" part of our day, I decided we'd head to the Children's Museum portion.  Everyone enjoyed the balls section.  Lawrence really liked when the balls would fall on his head after the overhead bucket got full.

Next to the balls was the mock supermarket, diner, home and gas station.  Here is Miss Lydia trying to eat a plastic pretzel she found:

Lawrence pushing the shopping buggy (or 'cart' for those of my Northern counterparts who don't know what a buggy is!).

Miss Lydia trying to eat a loaf of French bread!

After we arrived home, the little ones took naps and Archie and I baked the cake.  It was an extremely busy day and I was really glad I had thought ahead enough to prepare the sauce for the spaghetti before we left for the museum this morning!

Here is Lawrence and Lydia sitting on the porch, where we were anxiously awaiting Daddy's arrival home so the Dirthday Party could begin.

The little girl next door gave Lawrence a robot puppy.  Lawrence wanted to photograph it and needed us to hold it for him.

Daddy kept Baby busy while the boys and I decorated Lawrence's cake.  Here are the boys putting on the sprinkles.

And the finished product.  Lawrence was particularly excited about his 'twinkle twinkle star' candles!  Three of them!

All last week, Lawrence has been excited about his birthday.  First we are to turn out all the lights, then sing "Happy Dirthday", then blow out the candles and eat ice cream.  We did exactly those things, just as he said.

Here is Lawrence opening his presents.  A Batman thermos!  Wahoo!

Morgan and her boyfriend Zack joined us for the festivities.  Here is Lawrence tearing into another gift.

I realize how weird this is going to seem, but Lawrence really wanted some Pebbles cereal for his birthday.  Except he calls them Krebbles.  I don't buy them very often because the kids (and my husband) will eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they don't usually last more than two days.  So here is Lawrence's very own box of Krebbles!  I'm sure he'll be having multi-colored poops in the next few days due to eating so much of these things.

Morgan and Zack got Lawrence a Batmobile which goes all by itself and is super loud and just the thing that a three year old loves!  He and Archie were racing it against the other vehicles he got for his birthday.  Every time there was this same reaction!

Toward the end of the evening, I noticed his birthday gifts beginning to disappear.  Turns out he put them in the refrigerator to keep them away from Baby!

A very successful day was had and I think Lawrence had a great time turning three years old, although he absolutely insists he is two.  No matter.  He went to bed happy and is currently sleeping with his cars, new Batman lunch box with monkey jammies inside it, and Batman thermos with water.  Ready for anything the night has to offer.  Minus the Krebbles.  That's the last thing we need--lots of crunchy Krebbles keeping everyone awake all night!

Archie Dutton: Yard Magician, Street Performer Extraordinaire

Yard Chef.  Lemonade Salesman.  Popcorn Salesman.  Yard Musician.  Archie has worn many hats in his lifetime thus far.  Figuratively as well as literally, as the librarians, postal workers and our neighbours can attest.  I am thankful for a kid who seems to love to try new things, is a good self-learner and is very motivated, and is entertaining and funny to boot.

He has a variety of interests.  His more recent ones:  Survivalist.  Duct tape creations.  Origami.  Currently (and revisited from over a year ago) Magic.  He has been You-Tubing magic tricks, card tricks and such every day to learn and perfect his craft.  The whole family has been illusion guinea pigs and absolutely AMAZED by magic.  I would be a rich woman if I could keep all the coins that have been pulled out of my ears of late.

The other thing you should know about Archie is that his weekly allowance is five dollars.  Some time ago, we heard about a magic store in Cincinnati that is considered a must-see by folks in the magic industry.  Haines House of Cards.  We went weekend before last and Archie promptly blew his allowance that I handed to him on the way there.  To be fair, it WAS a very cool store and I would consider it a must-see for those interested in magic.  The guy behind the counter did lots of neat magic tricks to demo his products.  Everyone was thoroughly entertained and thoroughly amazed.  The allowance did it's own disappearing act from Archie's pocket and into the cash register.  Ooooooh, Magic!

Archie and his friend from next door made a go of a new Yard Venture:  Yard Magician!  Twenty-five cents (or more! it's good to keep your options open...)  gives you the opportunity to be utterly amazed by Archie the Great Illusionist.

Here he is with an actual paying customer!

Archie is getting quite good with his various shuffles and handling of the cards.  Here he is with the ribbon display and is making it wave back and forth.

The interesting thing is that all his other ventures turned out to be duds.  Although I certainly don't understand it.  I mean, who doesn't want to hear a cute kid strum a guitar and sing a song for a quarter?  Apparently the people in our neighbourhood.  No time to stop and hear a song, no time for one-dollar french toast (thankfully), a free cough drop, or a twenty-five cent glass of lemonade.

But magic tricks, however, have proven to be quite profitable.  Even after splitting his take with his assistant, he made almost enough money to equal his allowance.  And he was only out there for an hour on two days.  Not too shabby for a nine-year old!  Enough money to magically disappear along with another week's allowance at Haines House of Cards!
