We started pretty late because we wanted Phillip to be able to go with us and still get enough sleep for work tonight. We're only about 10 miles or so from Metropolis; it's just across the river. We went to the Superman museum first. We took these pictures outside the Superman museum. This is a great looking couple, don't ya think??
The Superman Museum was pretty neat. I don't think I've ever seen that much Superman junk ever, in my entire life. It apparently started as a guy who liked to collect Superman stuff and multiplied from there. It was interesting and we spent a while in there. Incidentally, I saw another item from my childhood which is currently in a museum...I know Mom and Regular E will remember...those plastic Popsicle mould things with the Superfriends holders...The Batman holder was blue, the Superman holder was red, and there was a Wonderwoman holder (I think yellow)...Anyhow...I find it intriguing that stuff I used to play with as a child is currently displayed in a museum! Again, Phillip used it as an opportunity to let me know how old I'm getting to be.
We got Superman t-shirts and left to visit the Superman Town Statue. Which is just as I described it...A large statue of Superman located outside the Towne Hall or something. Well, of course we had to get pictures:
Then I noticed something in the crook of Jake's arm--A bird's nest!!
As we were driving out of the thriving city of Metropolis, we stopped at the Welcome sign for the photo opportunity:
Next door to the welcome sign, we noticed a grocery store called Big John. Amazingly, the Big John statue is extremely larger than the Superman statue!! What's up with that?? The Hero of Metropolis...nay...the world-- gets a smaller statue than some dude carrying groceries!
In summary, if you really, really, really love Superman, then by all means go to Metropolis. If you're like me and enjoy the movies but aren't an expert on all the Superman comings and goings, then don't make a special trip up here. The museum was fun for a one-time deal for me. As well as the statue. It makes me think that all the Springfields around the United states should capitalize on the Simpsons! Metropolis is a nice pass-through place, much like Paducah, but definitely not a vacation destination. I thoroughly enjoyed our past few days' activities. It is really fun doing all the small-time stuff that people don't do because they're at the Grand Canyon or Niagra Falls. This is the part of Phillip's traveling that I enjoy...when we get to travel with him!
